Very interesting question: seriously i am confused ;-)

only difference i can think of is that the word duty is used in relation to goods taxed. (excise duty,Customs duty) if you see in both excise and customs act the words used are duty.

Also i think tax is a broader term which includes duty

As a general rule, money collected by a government from the privat sector does all fall under the category taxes. Whether the money collected is identified as "bridge toll", a loging fee, taxes on alcohol, business licences, animal licenses or any other form of techniques used by the government for the sole purpose to avoid transparancy over the total amount of funds shifted from the privat sector into the government's coffers in form of taxes.
