Werner,

Nicely done template for SMB retail.

I volunteer teach at a Small Business Development Center and will use it in my classes. I will of course give you attribution.

Werner,

It appears to me that your retail statements are actually from a manufacturing or construction company. Retail COGS typically does not include large labor components and "job materials" sounds like project specific or fabrication/mfg run expense, rather than inventory cost.

Michelle, I am assuming your question is not about a Chart Of Accounts but, rather, an idea about appropriate financial ratios for your subject company (how much inventory, an appropriate COGS, how much labor, etc). If, in fact, you are asking about a COA, I recommend looking at a Quickbooks retail product. If you are not interested in financial ratios, then the rest of my discussion will be apropos of the Rosanne Rosannadanna quote: Never Mind.

Appropriate ratios for retail will vary somewhat based on the type of retail: Beer, Wine, Liquor; clothing; electronics, appliances; food; furniture; gasoline; etc. They will also vary by size of the firm (often measured by size of assets on the balance sheet). I would recommend finding a source for this data in you public library (e.g. the Almanac of Business and Industrial Financial Ratios, by Leo Troy, or Industry Norms and Key Business Ratios from D&B Information Services). RMA publishes data but I think you have to buy it. Also, there are various on-line sources for this data but typically a subscription is required so, unless you need this data frequently, the freebees are a good baseline.
