Formula Review Tool

HI Again
I thought you Excel Gurus might be interested in a free Excel-based add-in which can broadly be described as a formula auditing tool.

The tool (known as bpmtraverse) makes it easier to get your head around complex formulae by breaking a formula down into it's components / precedents. You can see in the below picture that the tool contains two windows:

The top window re-states the formula. Hovering over any function will solve for a result.

The bottom window displays the unique precedents contained wihin the formula. You can then click on those precedents in order to step back through your formula (using the left and right arrows will also work).

As you can see in the above example, what appears to be a pretty longwinded formula actually only contains three major precedents!

There's a heap more to the tool and it contains a help button which can be viewed after installation.

I've included both the raw XLA below along with an EXE file which makes installation a bit easier as it automatically links up the add-in.

This is a fantastic little tool that makes it sooooo much easier to trace formulas around your spreadsheet. We've been using it in our spreadsheet auditing practice for years - it really works a treat!

i am sure it is a very useful tool but one wonders whether the formula used in the example , which has only three precedents , could have been derived in a more simple manner by using simple calculation blocks ; without any names ; and having an overall length less than that of my thumb ... and you could even trace it back using ctrl + [ .... and especially if it only referred to one column in a series of columns ... hoh hum now't so strange as other peoples use of excel

Thanks Mike

Please focus on the topic of this discussion which is in relation to a helpful formula review tool, rather than views on the optimal construct of formulae. In my experience, one rarely gets to choose how the models they review have been constructed, hence any tool that makes life easier is bound to be worth sharing with finance 3.0 members!

This formula was chosen due to its complexity and to demonstrate how the tool can help - I encourage you to download and try the tool on your own complex formula.

Hi Nicolas,

It is really worth piece of info and tool. And I agree with your opinion.

Only efficient people can think complex things rather than thinking of the easiest way ALWAYS. I am sure easiest ways are nice but not always. Ok Mike. We need to graduate our level of working as we gain more experience. Bottom line as Nicolas has said stick to the OBJECTIVE of discussion. Nothing personal. :)

Cheers
