Damodaran's country risk premium data and sovereign credit ratings indicate that growth in GDP plays a very minor role in country risk models.

Stray Thoughts,Mutual fund dividend

Sacha, just a point of view which you have not included in NAV mechanics on money market mutual funds available in other international markets. These funds offer higher interest rates than most bank deposits do. Such funds are invested in short term CD, treasury securities and government or corporate bonds. The fact that they earn higher yields is that they are riskier. Initially when such funds were created, had a floating NAV like any other mutual fund. On the day the fund opened, it would be… Continue

Sacha,Stray Thoughts,Gold ETF returns.

Appreciate your computations on current Gold ETFs average returns and the beta.

The investors are increasingly concerned about inflation, deflation, economic collapse and recovery, the thing that seems to be certain is uncertainty in the financial markets .Gold has been panacea to sooth concerns across the investment spectrum .There are many compelling reasons to investigate gold ETF funds for short term as well as long term investors.

The performance of gold ETF is tied to gold prices but oth… Continue

Sacha's Stray Thoughts,Bank of America

Sacha, BOA, discharging 5% redeemable preference shares if fallen due by raising additional common stock of $19 billion in uncertain times is I suppose a purely risk management exercise.
BOA has undertaken this step only after repaying the US government loan in the form of aid it received amounting to $45 billion.
It is incidental and natural now that the Obama government may not choose to interfere in fixing the CEO compensation terms designed by BOA .
The equity shareholders would definitely n… Continue

Stray Thoughts,"Does Taxation System Distort Investment Decisions?"

Sacha, I wonder the conclusions you wish to derive through your illustrations & analysis. Although logical if not entirely practical & abnormal.

If I buy a car, I definitely wish to go for loan option rather than funding entirely through my savings, Why? As long as I am productive and capable to create wealth, I naturally look out for financing options not because of any apparent risks. I also continue to pursue earning avenues to service such debts even when there is no tax deductibili… Continue

Hi,
This is Piyush Dhawan from Calcutta. Having gone through your profile, and because of your seniority, i was wondering if i could ask for a career advice. Sir, I am currently pursuing my Chartered Accountancy and my CA Final exam is due in Nov. 2010. I have also given the Level 1 International CFA exams this year and am waiting for the results due in January. Since my CA articleship was in a small sized firm, I did not have enough exposure to the various intricate elements of the course. As a result, I feel that I stand behind various other students who have worked in the likes of Price Water House, E&Y, KPMG etc, and also i do not have a substantial work experience. I am also keen on materialising my CFA. I have completed my Bachelor of Commerce from Calcutta. I wish to know how much important is work experience compared to a person with a strong academics behind his name. I would be grateful if you could throw some light on my problems.
Regards.
Piyush.

Thank you Mukund for a very interesting and probing question.
As an anesthesiologist (Anesthetist), I take care of people's HEALTH and protect them from death, by constantly monitoring continuously changing biological variables, and plotting a strategic course to a favorable outcome - they wake up! As a financial adviser, I take care of people's WEALTH, and protect them from losses and unnecessary taxes, by constantly monitoring continuously changing financial variables, and plotting a strategic course to a favorable outcome - they save money! I am about diagnosing people's pain, either health, or wealth (often both, and one the result of the other!) and making them better! The difference is that in anesthesia the time constant is short, and errors may result in death; In financial matters, time is allowably much longer. Being a MBA candidate broadens my perspective.
Being in decision science yourself, I hope this helps you.
